Issue Position: Transportation

Issue Position

Transportation, both surface and air, is a key issue for the State of Arizona. Ensuring that our highways, airports, and transit programs operate efficiently and reliably is integral to supporting economic growth and development in Arizona. Infrastructure in Arizona plays a key role in the movement of goods, and Arizona's proximity to Mexico means that our state's roadways are also significant for international trade and commerce.

The federal government has a key role to play in supporting our nation's infrastructure, and investments in infrastructure will ensure our economy remains strong and our businesses remain competitive. John has always fought the earmarks and wasteful projects that so often occur in transportation policy. Instead, John has fought to increase the role of the state in setting transportation priorities and to improve its ability to carry-out projects without federal government interference, always while working with the state, cities, and counties in Arizona to ensure the State has the necessary resources to support Arizona's growing population.

For example, in March 2015, Senator McCain introduced the Intermountain West Corridor Development Act of 2015, legislation that would extend the future Interstate-11's designation from the southern border of Arizona through Nevada -- including connecting Phoenix and Las Vegas -- to ultimately reach the Canadian border. Specifically, the bill would provide both states' Departments of Transportation the flexibility to develop a Northern Nevada connectivity corridor and a Southern Arizona connectivity corridor as part of the I-11 effort. The highway would be vital to unlocking Arizona's economic potential and to connecting Arizona's communities and economy to major domestic and international trade partners.
